Nelson
Rocks Preserve -Located
2 ½ miles north of Circleville on Rt. 28 near the intersection
with US Rt. 33, the privately operated preserve offers trails for
hikers and challenges for rock climbers without the crowds. The
hiking trail leads to the top of the rocks for a 360-degree view
of the North Fork valley.
Reasonably fit individuals looking for adventure can reach the top
by using the via ferrata (path of iron). It is a way for
those with no rock climbing experience to safely scale the steep
faces of Nelson Rocks. Outfitted
with helmets, harnesses and lanyards visitors clip to stainless
steel cable and ascend using tungsten steel rungs drilled and glued
into the rock on the steeper sections of the climb.
The Nelson Rocks via ferrata is one of only three in the
U.S.A., although there are more than 300 in Europe.
Guided climbs are also available.
Via ferrata open by appointment only. Trail hiking open daily.
