Wild Geranium - Geranium maculatum • (Geranium family - Geraniaceae)

 

Wild Geranium - Geranium maculatum • (Geranium family - Geraniaceae) • Note the 3-parted hairy leaves and the long beak or crane's bill in the center of the flower. The name is derived from geranos, which is Greek for "crane."

 



It was thought to resemble the beak of a crane. At the base of each petal is a tuft of hair which protects the nectar in the almost upright flower from rain and dew. 1- 2 ft. Woods and shady roadsides.
