Bowman's-Root - Gillenia trifoliata (Rose family - Rosaceae) The twisted petals and stems give this plant an untidy appearance. In many instances the calyx is reddish. 2 -3 ft.

 

 

 

 

Rich woods. The root contains a very bitter substance and was used by Native Americans and colonists as a mild emetic and for this reason it is also called Indian Physic.
