Round-leaved Yellow Violet - Viola rotundifolia (Violet family - Violaceae)

Round-leaved Yellow Violet - Viola rotundifolia (Violet family - Violaceae) This is our only yellow stemless yellow violet: the leaves and flowers arise on separate stalks. Note its small size with roundish leaves close to the ground. 2 - 5 in. April - May.

At flowering time the leaves are partly curled but later they spread out flat on the ground. The leaves of all yellow violets can be eaten in salads or used to thicken soups and stews.
