Synopsis: This was the annual youth production sponsored by the Pendleton County Committee for the Arts. During the last weekend in July, a company of talented young actors brought to life the magic and adventure of the musical, "Oz" at the Smith Creek Playhouse. In Tim Kelly's adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic, "The Wizard of Oz," one of the most enchanting stories ever told comes to the stage for an exciting theatrical event.

In "Oz," we met all of the familiar personalities, including Dorothy (played by Mary Granofsky) the Scarecrow (Jeremiah Propst), the Tin Man (Chynna Kiser), and the Cowardly Lion (Ethan Hansen). As these four heroes journeyed to the Emerald City, they were in constant opposition to the evil tricks of the Wicked Witch of the West (Hillary Kiser). Determined to thwart Dorothy and her companions, the Witch inflicts all sorts of obstacles upon them. Vicious fighting trees and a field of sleep-inducing singing poppies were just some of her malicious interventions. In addition to these beloved characters, we also met some delightful new ones along the way and were treated to new songs as well.

Heather Propst, who has directed the last two summer youth shows, directed again this year. Musical direction was provided by Amy Vandevander, who also had worked with the youth show for three years. Both were very excited to be able to help bring such a fun and rewarding experience to area youth — and they had a lot of fun themselves while they're at it. Ray Propst, a regular fixture at the Playhouse's sound and light boards, headed up the production's technical crew.
