A much loved tradition in Pendleton County theater returned during the Treasure Mountain Festival (2006). "Torn Valleys," the stage adaptation of the novel, "Twixt North and South," (H.M. Calhoun) was performed at the Smith Creek Playhouse over the festival weekend and the following weekend. Pendleton County residents have come to love the play, and the book that inspired it, for its poignant portrayal of the human impact of the Civil War in this area.

This year the story came to life under the direction of Liz Warner. A Pendleton County native, Warner spent much of her time growing up at the Smith Creek Playhouse, serving in every capacity of Playhouse productions. Her involvement sparked a lifelong interest in the stage that led to a four-year study of Visual and Performing Arts at West Virginia University.

For Warner, the theme of war extends beyond the drama of "Torn Valleys" and into her own life as her husband is currently serving in Iraq. She hopes that her respect for those who must undergo firsthand the tragedies of war will be evident in the production. She has introduced some new elements to the show while still keeping true to Ms. Johnson's script. Even for those who've seen every past production, this year's should prove to be fresh and engaging yet still the "Torn Valleys" they know and love.

Many people pitched in to make the show a success, both as actors and behind the scenes. Technical assistance came from Beth Altemus, Debbie Bergeron, Dwayne Borrer Lois Byers, Grey Cassell, Miriam Cockley, Sharon and Mary Granofsky, Madeline Hoover, Craig & Paula Hott, Kristen Mitchell, Shawn Moyers, Mallory Roberson, Mary Jane Santelli and Dwight Sponaugle.
