This tour begins at the Sugar Grove Rescue Squad parking area.
To get there take State Rt. 21 from US Rt. 33 in Brandywine and
proceed 10.8 miles to Sugar Grove. Bear left in Sugar Grove, continuing
on Rt. 21, and go 0.2 miles to the Rescue Squad Building below the
road on the left.
Begin the tour by turning left on Rt. 21 and gradually ascend the
river valley of the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac
River. The dry, shaley soil provides growing conditions suited to
the pine and cedar trees lining the road. At 4.3 miles, turn right
onto Crummett Run Road (Rt. 21/8) for a 2½ mile climb beside
the small run of the same name.
In August 2003, engorged by torrential rains, the run flooded the
road, causing damage evidenced by the road repairs.

At 6.3 miles, go straight at the intersection with Simmons Mt.
Road and top out at 6.9 miles, only to descend and climb short distances
before finally reaching the last hilltop at 7.5 miles. This particular
stretch of road is unmatched for its combination of grand distant
vistas and attractive roadside farmscapes. Descend into the valley
on a 1.8 mile glide and at 9.4 miles, turn right on Doe Hill Road
(Rt. 23).
At 9.9 miles, after crossing the bridge, go straight and begin
a steady uphill run over Hoover Mt., topping out at 11.4 miles.
From this vantage point, the South Fork Valley and Shenandoah Mt.
beyond it, set the stage for a scenic 1.9 mile glide down to Sugar
Grove. At 13.3 miles, turn right and go 0.2 miles back to the Sugar
Grove Rescue Squad parking area.
