Seneca Rocks Discovery Center Activities for 2007

Shaver's Mountain Ramblers
The Discovery Center is proud once again to present traditional Appalachian artisans and crafts people demonstrating their arts and skills on weekends throughout the summer season. Demonstrations began on Memorial weekend and generally go to Labor Day weekend. This year demonstrations will extend into the fall color season. In addition to the artisan demonstrations, there will be traditional mountain music on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. in the auditorium.
Alan Miller
Sites Homestead, located nearby, is normally open Memorial Day to Labor Day on Thursday through Sunday for tours of the house and heritage gardens. Please verify a specific event or activity
with the Center at (304) 567-2827.
This is an active calendar that will be updated throughout the season. Circumstances may necessitate a change in the scheduled activities listed below.

KEY:
SRDC - Seneca Rocks Discovery Center
SH - Sites Homestead
OL - Overlook

Program Descriptions:
Appalachian Music
- The music of the mountains comes in many forms, and on Saturday afternoons at 1:00 p.m., we showcase the music in the Discovery Center. Feel free to stay for a minute. . . or an hour. The concerts are free.
Cliff-scaling Soldiers of West Virginia - As World War II raged in Europe, the army brought soldiers here to learn how to climb rock, pack horses and fire artillery. This 20-minute DVD tells the story of the West Virginia Maneuvers. Shown in the Discovery Center Auditorium.
Climbing Seneca
- Each year climbers from around the world travel to Seneca Rocks to test their skills. Discover why this rock is so dear to climbers and how they attempt to meet its challenges safely.
Heritage Craft Demonstrations
- Each week crafters and artists demonstrate their skills at the Discovery Center. Please note that dates are subject to change. Contact the Discovery Center in advance if you are planning your trip to see a particular demonstration.
Kids Only: The Flower Floor Challenge - Come to the Discovery Center Children's Area on Sunday mornings between 10:00 and 11:30 and try to label the parts of our giant "floor flower." If a youth beats the clock, he or she will win a prize. Participants must bring an adult, but the adult doesn't get to play!
Meet a Snake - Meet some of West Virginia's scaly inhabitants in the Children's Area. All of our snakes are non-venomous.
Short Talks - These 10- to-15-minute presentations are held on the patio.
Stories in the Rocks - Something about Seneca Rocks inspires the imagination. Some people have seen Indian maidens; others find the faces of presidents. Let us introduce you to the legends and faces of the rocks.
